Bay Windows vs Bow Windows — What Is the Difference?
Homeowners in Toronto tend to interchange the two terms. They are however, two differing types of window styles that have different profiles, number of panels and have differing visual traits.
Bay Windows
Bay window is a combination of three panels. The central window is a huge fixed window. The two side panels of the flanks have an outward angle that is normally 30 or 45 degrees and are normally casement or double hung with the purpose of ventilation. Due to their angular geometrical design, the bay windows would be fitting in the extensive variety of housing styles in Toronto, which includes post-war brick houses in East York as well as new constructions in North York and Scarborough. Protruding out of the wall they create a strong architecture element that gives a lot of curb appeal.
Bow Windows
A bow window is made with four or five different panels that are the same size and are curbed in a soft outward curve. The entire profile is more rounded and round than a bay window due to the fact that all the panels are the same width. End units are casement units which ventilate normally. The centre panels are normally fixed to maximum glass area. Bow windows are especially well fitting to the Victorian, Edwardian, and heritage types of homes in Toronto, and the sweeping curve of the windows mimics the extravagant nature of the older Toronto neighbourhoods such as Roncesvalles, Leslieville and The Annex.

Bay and Bow Window Configurations We Install
3-Panel Bay Window — 30 and 45 Degree
We have a large fixed centre panel with two functional casement or double hung side panels in our usual bay window. The 30 degree installation forms a more shallow projection which is more appropriate in Toronto houses where the wall opening is less spacious. The 45 degree design extends further outwards building a deeper interior bay and a more dramatic appearance on the street. Since the two setups utilize the same type of panels, it will be a matter of the size of your walls and the position of an interior ledge which you wish to have how deep.
4-Panel Bow Window - 10 and 30 Degree
We have a bow set-up at entry level consisting of four equal panels (two fixed centre panels and two operative casement end panels). This fits the majority of Toronto living rooms and master bedrooms with between 6 and 9 feet wide wall opening. Moreover, the four-panel bow produces a rounded and graceful line, which suits the Toronto legacy and semi-detached houses particularly well in which a dramatic angular bay would be an even more obvious misfit.
5-Panel Bow Window
Our most popular high-end design is the five-panel bow. It employs five even panels which are three fixed centre units, two operable casement ends that form a larger, more generous projection which curves that dramatically changes any room. This is due to the fact that five panels in a larger opening are used in bigger detached houses of Toronto and in any room where you would prefer the bay to be the undeniable centre of the room.
Custom Bay and Bow Configurations
Toronto houses are not that identical. The wide variation of wall openings and rooflines as well as architectural detail between the different eras and neighbourhoods of the city makes Milano provide complete custom bay and bow options. Select your number of panels, projection angle, glass package, frame colour, interior finish and choice of hardware combination – each unit is manufactured to your individual specifications.

Glass and Frame Options for Toronto's Climate
Low-E Argon Glass
Milano bay and bow windows are all fitted with Low-E coated windows filled with Argon gas which comes as a standard. The Low-E coating acts as a bi-direction thermal barrier which reflects the radiant heat to your Toronto home in winter and keeps the sun out in summer. Also, paned superArgon gas lowers the thermal conductivity of the glass itself, keeping the inside of the building the same temperature all year long.
Triple Pane Glass Upgrade
To homeowners of Toronto who have exceptionally exposed lots, such as corner houses, or are on a busy artery like Bloor or Danforth or St. Clair, or are in an area that is prone to the wind in a lake neighbourhood, we are providing a triple pane glass upgrade. Three layers of glass have two cavities that are filled with Argon gas and provide much better thermal performance and noise reduction performance than typical units with two layers.
Frame Colour Options
Milano bay and bow window frames come in a complete palette of colours such as classics white, matte black, bronze, grey and custom colour to match your home exterior colour scheme. Due to the wealth of different brick colours, choice of siding colours and architectural designs, Toronto has a great variety of housing that is available, therefore, we also have dual colour frames, one colour on the outside and another colour finish on the inside to allow all the flexibility of the design.
Bay and Bow Window Installation in Toronto
The installation of a bay and bow windows is complicated compared to a normal window replacement. Since these windows stick out in front of the exterior wall, the installation should concern the support of the structure, exterior flashing, construction of overhangs on a roof, and interior finishing, not only of the window unit itself.
What Our Toronto Installation Includes
All Toronto installations of Milano bay and bow windows include:
- Full removal and disposal of your existing window
- Wall opening and header structural analysis
- Installation of the bay or bow window unit into the rough opening
- Building and insulating of the exterior roof overhang area
- Installation and fitting of interior seat board
- Full exterior flashing and weatherproofing to prevent water infiltration
- Interior trim and casing to match your existing finish
- Fully clean up the site before the time we go
How Long Does Installation Take for Bay and Bow Window?
In Toronto a standard bay or bow window redo will need between 6 and 8 hours – normally a day. New construction bay / bow windows, where the wall shows no present window, can take longer depending upon the preparation of wall opening involved. Since we do not subcontract, your installation will always be carried out by the trained and experienced team at Milano which was the same team who quoted your job.
Signs Your Existing Bay or Bow Window Needs Replacing
Toronto houses contain many homes with aged bay or bow windows that are long since out of service. Be aware of the following warning signs:
- Cold or drafts coming into the frame round the frame, or in the seat board
- Water stains or rot on the bottom of the seat board – evidence of failure in flashing
- Condensation or fogging of the panes of glass
- Sagging or drooping seat board caused by structural deterioration
- Cracked or damaged exterior roof section above the bay
- Difficulty operating the side or end casement panels
- Visible gaps between the bay unit and the surrounding wall
Moreover; the bay windows which are older with single-pane glass or uninsulated seat boards are major sources of heat loss in Toronto homes during winter seasons and this is what usually causes observable cold rooms despite having an adequate heating.
Frequently Asked Questions — Bay and Bow Windows Toronto
Q: How much does a bay window cost in Toronto?
A typical 3-panel unit of bay window installation in Toronto will cost between 2,500 and 4,000 dollars depending on size, glass package and frame colour. Bow windows cost between 3500 and 5500 with 4 or 5 panel set up. Since each opening is unique, Milano will offer a free in-home consultation and a detailed quote without any obligation.
Q: How deep does a bay window project from the wall?
The bay window usually extends out about 12 to 14 inches out of your exterior wall, at 30-degree. Projecting of a 45 degree bay is between 16 and 22 inches. Box-style bay windows protrude to an extent of 24 inches. The depth influences the width of your interior window seat ledge – the deeper the projections, the greater interior usable space.
Q: Do bay and bow windows qualify for energy rebates in Toronto?
Yes. Since the bay and bow windows of the Milano are certified Energy Star, they can receive the Canada Greener Homes Grant – up to 5,000 dollars in qualifying energy-efficient upgrades. You will have your consultation with our team as we will check your eligibility and take you through the application.
Q: Is a bay window or bow window better for a Victorian Toronto home?
Bow windows would better match the Victorian and Edwardian houses in Toronto, since the curved shape reminds of the extravagant and curved architectural elements that were specific to those periods. Nevertheless, bay windows may also suit very well on Victorians as long as the projection and trim finish are aligned with the existing character. Do you have a consultation with our team to find the best alternative to your particular home.
Q: Can you replace just the glass in an existing bay window?
In some cases, yes. If the frame structure is sound and the seat board and roof section are intact, a glass-only replacement may be possible. However, if the frame shows signs of rot, warping, or structural movement, a full unit replacement is the better long-term solution. Milano assesses every existing bay window before recommending the most cost-effective approach.
Q: Do you need a permit for a bay window installation in Toronto?
In some cases, yes. In the case of sound frame structure, intact seat board and roof section, there is a possibility of the glass-only replacement. But, in case of frame signs of rot, warping, or structural movement, it is more beneficial to change the entire unit in the long run. Milano will evaluate all the available bay windows and give the most economical solution.
