Tilt & Turn Windows Toronto | Supply & Installation
Most windows do one thing – they open one way and that’s it. Tilt turn windows have two functions and they perform them very well.
Two completely different modes with one handle and a single turn: Tilt the sash inward from the top to create ventilation without compromising security; or swing the entire sash open like a door for maximum unobstructed airflow and interior cleaning. No ladders. No leaning out. No compromises.
The combination of these two functions makes tilt and turn windows one of the most popular window options for Toronto homeowners – especially those in condos, townhouses, old brick houses, and where safety, ventilation and ease of maintenance are all equally important.
Milano Windows & Doors has been installing tilt turn windows in Toronto, the GTA and Ontario since 1992.
Why Toronto Homeowners Choose Tilt Turn Windows
Superior Ventilation for Ontario's Climate
Summers in Toronto are humid. The importance of ventilation in your home goes beyond comfort – it’s about controlling moisture that can cause condensation and mold in older homes. Tilt turn windows offer true control – open up slightly to allow for cross-ventilation, or open fully to allow heat to escape a room in no time! No other window style offers that versatility.
Built-In Security You Can Actually Trust
If a window is cracked open in tilt mode, it will not open completely from the outside. This multi-point locking system locks at the top, bottom and sides of the frame at the same time, making a closed tilt turn window much harder to break than a single point locking casement or slider. That’s a big deal for ground floor bedrooms, basement windows and rooms that share a fence or laneway.
Easy Cleaning Without the Risk
Cleaning the exterior glass on a second- or third-storey window is one of those tasks that most Toronto homeowners either ignore or pay someone else to handle. In turn mode, the sash swings fully inward, exposing both faces of the glass for cleaning from a safe position inside the room. One of the most practical features of any window style, and one of the most under-appreciated until you’ve used it.
Exceptional Energy Efficiency
Tilt turn windows are designed to a close compression seal. The multi-point locking system tightly secures the sash to the frame on four sides, without air gaps for drafts like traditional windows. Combined with Milano’s Low-E triple-glazing and argon-filled glass units, tilt turn windows offer remarkable thermal performance throughout the long heating season in Toronto. You can look forward to significant savings on your heating and cooling bills from year to year.
Ideal for Condos, Townhouses, and Older Toronto Homes
Tilt turn windows are ideal for properties that are limited on space and where outside opening windows are not feasible. Both modes swing outward, making them useful on balconies, near walkways and as well as any space where an outward swing would pose a hazard or obstacle. Tilt turn windows may be the best option for condo owners who have limited outdoor space for window replacement.

How Tilt & Turn Windows Work
The tilt & turn window mechanism was of European origin and functions around a single multi-position handle to open the window in two different ways:
Tilt Mode
Turn the handle 90 degrees. The top edge of the sash swings inward about 10-15 cm up, the bottom remains fixed. Fresh air comes in from the top, and there’s not enough room for anyone to sneak through. This is the most popular usage among Toronto homeowners – allows them to ventilate safely, even at night, without concerns about security or insects entering the house.
Turn Mode
Turn the handle 180 degrees. Similar to an inward-opening casement door, the sash hangs vertically from the side. This provides 100% airflow and inside to outside access on the exterior glass surface. It’s easy to clean the outside of a second story window with both feet on the floor.
A single handle controls both opening modes. Precision-engineered with multi-point locking hardware that locks the window at multiple points around the frame when closed, tilt turn windows are among the most secure window styles around.

Who Are Tilt & Turn Windows Right For?
Condo and townhouse owners who require an inward opening window for use in building restrictions and confined balcony clearances.
Parents and families that wish for ventilation but don’t want the space filled with a gap that is large enough for children or pets to reach. This opening is safe and controlled in tilt mode.
Toronto residents living in older neighbourhoods – such as the Annex, Roncesvalles, Leslieville, and East York who want to replace their original double-hung or single-pane windows and take advantage of the energy efficiency improvements.
Anyone in an upper floor building who has been frustrated with the exterior window-cleaning task.
Secure home-owners who want to air out a home at night without leaving any significant gap.
Frequently Asked Questions - Tilt & Turn Windows Toronto
What are tilt turn windows?
Tilt turns windows open from the top and from the side, making it easier to ventilate securely day after day and clean the inside of the window. They are one of the most flexible and energy-efficient window types for Toronto homes.
Are tilt turn windows good for Toronto's climate?
Yes, they’re very appropriate to the Ontario climate. Multi-point locking system provides a compression seal on all four sides when closed which prevents drafts and thermal bridging. When paired with Low-E triple glazing and argon fill, tilt turn windows offer some of the highest levels of insulation for any residential window type.
Can tilt turn windows be used in condos in Toronto?
Yes. Tilt turn windows are great for condos, apartments and townhouses where outward opening windows would interfere with balcony clearances or building bylaws. Please check the specific opening requirements with your condo corporation before ordering.
How secure are tilt turn windows?
Very secure. When the window is tilted inwards, it will not open more than a maximum of 5 cm from the outside due to the physical gap being too small to overcome. Multi-point locking hardware locks at five or more points on the frame at once, making tilt turn windows much more difficult to force open than single point casement and slider windows.
How much do tilt turn windows cost in Toronto?
Toronto tilt turn window prices depend on the size, frame color, glass type and number of windows that are to be replaced. Contact Milano for a free in-home consultation and detailed quote specific to your home. Right now, 40% of all window installations are on promotion.
Do tilt turn windows come in different colours and sizes?
Yes. Milano’s tilt turn windows come in white, black, wood grain and custom colours. Standard residential sizes or custom sizes for larger openings or architecture are both available.
Are tilt turn windows ENERGY STAR certified?
Yes. All Milano tilt turn windows are ENERGY STAR certified for the climate zones in Canada and qualify for the Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) rebates.
How long does tilt turn window installation take?
Installing a tilt turn window usually takes around an hour and a half or two hours per window installed. The full home replacement with multiple tilt turn windows typically takes 1-2 days. All measuring, installation and post installation inspection are carried out by the installation team of Milano.
What is the warranty on Milano's tilt turn windows?
Milano offers a lifetime transferable warranty for all tilt turn windows and installation. The warranty will be passed to the next homeowner if your home is sold, increasing its value to the next owner.
How do I clean tilt turn windows?
Switching to turn mode, the sash will swing completely towards the inside, giving access to both sides of the glass to clean. No ladders or exterior access required – even for upper floors. It’s one of the more useful practical daily benefits of tilt turn windows.
