If you’ve been putting off window replacement because you figured that the Canada Greener Homes Grant would help pay for it, then you are not alone. Thousands of Ontario homeowners were planning renovations based on this popular federal program; and many of them are now asking themselves; is the money still there?
Well, the short answer is no – but the longer one is more useful.
Everything you need to know about the closed and how it was replaced, as well as how Toronto and Ontario homeowners can still save real money on window replacement in 2026.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant Is Now Closed
Let’s clear up the facts first.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed and has a maximum payment limit of $5k, for energy retrofits like new windows and new doors. It will no longer take new applications in February 2024. The last date to submit documents by existing participants was December 31, 2025.
A Canada Greener Homes Loan was established shortly after, offering interest-free financing of up to $40,000 for 10 years. It closed its application process on 1st October, 2025.
As of today, there are no more new applications taken for either program.
Prior to its closure, the program had a big impact. More than 406,000 households retrofitted, and received grants, and of those, more than 145,000 Canadians used the program specifically for window or door replacement.
But all this is behind us. It’s what you have today that counts.
What Replaced the Greener Homes Grant for Ontario Homeowners?
The federal government didn’t just abandon energy efficiency, it completely changed its energy efficiency strategy. Ontario also started up a program at the provincial level that is arguably easier to access.
Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) – Active Until November 2026
This is the program that every Ontario homeowner should be looking at now.
The Home Renovation Savings Program is supported by Ontario’s 12-year, $10.9 billion investment in energy efficiency, launched in January 2025 and offered via Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy (IESO). Applications are on-going and will be accepted until November 30th, 2026.
The rebate for windows and doors applies to windows only, and is $100 per qualified rough opening (at least 3 windows). This means, if you replace 10 windows in your Toronto house you will have $1000 to recover.
$100 an opening may not be earthshattering by itself. Now that’s where the program starts to come in handy: bundling.
Window replacement ($250 rebate) and up to $7,700 for attic insulation – all at the same time, under the same program. If this bundled path is followed, a pre- and post-retrofit energy assessment will be required by a registered energy advisor, however, the savings for the most part far exceed this requirement.
Who qualifies for the HRSP?
If you own a detached, semi-detached, townhouse, row house or mobile home on a permanent foundation, and you heat your home with any of the following, you may be eligible:
- Enbridge Gas’s natural gas
- Connect electrical, oil, propane or wood to Ontario electric grid
If you own a condominium, your moves may be slightly limited by additional restrictions; ask your property manager before making any decisions.
Important: The program was extended due to high demand, but it does have a hard deadline of November 30, 2026. If you’re planning a window project this year, the sooner you start the process, the better.
The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) – Coming to Ontario
The government has announced at the federal level the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP), a replacement for the original grant. It will be funded with an $800 million budget over five years and will be expected to provide up to four times the value of the previous grant program.
With CGHAP’s “direct install” model, eligible households contribute no out-of-pocket expenses. They’re the organizations with the necessary training who will cover the expenses and arrangements for providing the retrofit for you.
But there’s good news for Ontario: CGHAP is province-by-province, with individual agreements. In September 2025, Manitoba was the first province to sign its provincial agreement. Ontario homeowners do not currently have access to the CGHAP, as Ontario has yet to announce its agreement, as of early 2026.
After Ontario signs, the program will target low-to-median income homeowners and tenants with specific income thresholds for the province to be announced at that time. Please check the Natural Resources Canada website for updates.
What This Means If You’re Planning a Window Replacement in 2026
Let’s look at where things stand for Toronto and Ontario homeowners now:
| Program | Status | Window Rebate | Who Qualifies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Greener Homes Grant | Closed (Dec 31, 2025) | Up to $5,000 | N/A — no new applicants |
| Canada Greener Homes Loan | Closed (Oct 1, 2025) | Up to $40,000 (loan) | N/A — no new applicants |
| Ontario HRSP | Active (until Nov 30, 2026) | $100 per rough opening | Enbridge Gas or Ontario grid customers |
| CGHAP (Federal) | Not yet in Ontario | TBD | Low-to-median income, once Ontario signs |
The HRSP is the active program for the majority of Ontarians in the home market. This is where your rebate money is going to be coming from if you are installing new windows and bundling at the same time.
Do Your Windows Actually Need to Qualify? Yes – Here’s What to Look For
If you want to qualify for the Home Renovation Savings Program, your replacement windows should be ENERGY STAR® certified for Canada. Not every window available will qualify and this is something to check with your installer prior to installation.
ENERGY STAR certified windows are designed specifically for the Canadian climate zone and will be configured to withstand the cold winter weather and the humid summers in Toronto. Beyond the rebate, they help you save money on your heating and cooling costs year over year, minimize condensation, and reduce heat loss.
When asking for quotes, make sure you inquire from the installer: “Are your windows ENERGY STAR approved for my climate zone?” A good firm will be able to answer this question and have documentation.
The Bottom Line
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is no longer available. The loan is gone. The money-saving window replacement insulation Ontario offered in 2026 is still out there, it just has a different program.
The Government of Canada Home Renovation Savings Program is on-going, funded and claims are being processed. You qualify if you own your home, are replacing at least 3 windows and use natural gas or electricity to heat your home. Add insulation to your project, and/or air seal it, and the rebate really starts to ratchet up.
Do you make a low-to median income? Watch your costs on CGHAP, as Ontario’s provincial agreement could cover much more of your costs once signed.
Don’t put off a better program. HRSP’s go through November 30, 2026 and program administrators indicate they may adjust or terminate rebates due to funding. When the money is there, that’s when the best time to act is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant still available in 2026?
No. In February 2024, the Canada Greener Homes Grant closed for new applications. The deadline for existing participants to submit documents was December 31st 2025. This program is totally closed.
What about the Canada Greener Homes Loan?
Also closed. On October 1, 2025, the Greener Homes Loan ended its application process. No longer available to the Ontario homeowner.
What rebates are available for window replacement in Ontario right now?
The existing program is the Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) in Ontario, by Enbridge Gas and Save. It is a minimum of 3 windows or doors that receive $100 per window/door. With other enhancements such as insulation and air sealing, total rebates can be up to $12,000.
When does the Home Renovation Savings Program end?
The program is expected to be in effect until November 30, 2026. Program administrators do have the flexibility to adjust or cancel the program early if funds are not available, however, so the sooner the better.
What is CGHAP and can I apply in Ontario?
The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) is a newly launched federally-funded program of $800 million supporting low to median income homes. It takes a direct install approach, meaning that if eligible, customers with nothing to pay upfront. Ontario homeowners have not yet signed its provincial agreement; as of early 2026 homeowners will not be able to apply. In September 2025, Manitoba was the first province to sign.
Do my replacement windows need to be a specific type to qualify?
Yes. To compete in the Home Renovation Savings Program windows must be ENERGY STAR® Certified for Canada. Please ensure that you check with your installer prior to work commencing.
Can I stack HRSP rebates with other programs?
HRSP typically does not allow stacking rebates with other incentives from Enbridge Gas or Save on Energy for the same upgrade. Toronto Homeowners can get low interest financing for the entire home energy project through a combination of HRSP and the City of Toronto’s Home Energy Loan Program (HELP). Please check stacking rules when you apply.
What if I already replaced my windows this year – can I still claim?
Applications must be completed and submitted by November 30, 2026 and all work must be completed. Check with Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy for eligibility of recently completed projects.
